Ensuring connections between North and South Devon are secure is Route One Highways as it is awarded a £235 thousand contract from South West Highways to repair Devon’s largest bridge.

The 40 year old Teign Estuary viaduct, which carries the A380 dual carriageway over the river, is in need of urgent works to permanently repair the failed expansion joint to prevent structural damage to the bridge.

Route One Highways were awarded the contract as one of only a handful of UK based operators approved to carry out the works and fit the specified high-end Mageba specialist expansion joint.

As part of their contractual arrangements, limited disruption to traffic flow and the environment is essential. Route One will be working one lane at a time across all four lanes and using the quicker and more effective hydrodemoliton process to remove concrete from the joint.

Preventing contaminated water entering the Teign Estuary  Route One have constructed an environment bung placed under the viaduct pumping the hydrodemolition water into a specialist container for removal.

Darryl Taylor, Commercial Manager at Route One Highways says: “We had to move swiftly to replace the joint to ensure no structural damage was sustained through heavy vehicles, thermal factors or even the wind.  Thankfully with one lane now complete we are on schedule  for the works to be completed by September.“

Route One Highways is a privately held company based in Featherstone, West Yorkshire and provides quality structures and highway maintenance services across the UK.
