HARLINGEN — Contractors on the city’s Brazil and Teege road improve-ment project are placing an expansion joint on a Cameron County-owned bridge, following concerns expressed by area resident Greg Smith.
Smith, a retired industrial engineer who lives nearby, has been bringing his concerns to light for several weeks, and has caught the attention of both city and county officials.
“The county has looked into the matter,” Cameron County Deputy Administrator David A. Garcia told the Star Friday, adding that the county’s engineering department staff has been in contact with Smith and the city of Harlingen.
Smith had expressed concern that an expansion joint had not been placed when the contractors on the city project cemented an approach to the bridge.
Garcia provided a photograph Friday showing that the project contractor had started the first part of the required work on the Teege Road bridge to place the expansion joint. Garcia said that this part of the work was completed on July 3.
“The contractor is scheduled to go back to complete the 3/4-inch joint, add the 1-inch backer rod, and 3/8-inch thick layer of SL1 sealant,” Garcia told the Star.
